the Perfect Hotel for a 1-2 Night Stay

When you’re only away for a weekend, your hotel matters more than you think.

You don’t need 5-star luxury or an infinity pool, you just need the right place in the right location that helps you make the most of your limited time. Over the years, I’ve figured out exactly what works and what doesn’t when it comes to booking a hotel for a short city break.

Here’s what I look for when choosing the perfect hotel for a 1 or 2-night stay.

1. Location Is Everything

If I’m only in a city for a couple of days, I don’t want to waste time commuting or getting lost on the underground. I always try to stay somewhere central and walkable, ideally within 15–20 minutes of key sights, public transport, and a few food spots.

✅ Near the main station or city centre

✅ Walkable to at least 1 or 2 major attractions

✅ Safe and lively area (especially important for solo travellers)

2. Flexible Check-In and Check-Out

Arriving early? Leaving late? A hotel with luggage storage or early check-in options makes a huge difference.

I don’t want to be dragging a suitcase around all day, I want to drop my bag and get exploring.

Tip: I always check reviews for how the hotel handles early arrivals. Some are really accommodating and others, not so much.

3. Comfort Without the Fuss

For 2 nights, I don’t need a suite. But I do want a good bed, clean room, and quiet sleep.

What matters to me:

  • Comfortable bed and decent blackout curtains

  • A powerful shower

  • Quiet at night (especially if it’s near nightlife or a train station)

  • Strong Wi-Fi (who can live without that?)

Bonus points if there’s a desk or coffee machine in the room, but honestly, it’s not a deal-breaker.

4. Breakfast On-Site or Nearby

I’m not fussy but having a good breakfast option on-site saves time and makes mornings smoother.

If not, I always check what cafés or bakeries are nearby. I love starting the day with a decent cup of coffee and something local.

In fact, some of my best travel memories start with a bakery five minutes from my hotel…

5. Value for Money Over Cheapness

I’m not chasing the cheapest price but I am looking for the best value.

A £90 hotel that saves me hours of travel, offers free breakfast, and has a solid location is far better than a £60 room an hour out of town with no amenities.

I always compare based on:

  • Location convenience

  • Inclusions (Wi-Fi, breakfast, cancellation)

  • Reviews (especially recent ones)

6. Real Reviews > Star Ratings

I’ve learned to trust real traveller reviews more than star ratings. I scan for:

  • Cleanliness

  • Staff friendliness

  • Whether it actually matches the photos

  • Noise issues

If I see “thin walls,” “noisy bar downstairs,” or “dodgy neighbourhood” mentioned more than twice, I won’t stay there.

And remember, don’t just dream it, live it!
